The opening band.
Not the greatest...

FUNERAL PARTY - SHOW REVIEW

The opening band.

Not the greatest spot to be in, despite the lack of a lengthy soundcheck, the opening band has to make the most of it, even more when the headlining band is in their hometown.

This night was different, this night the opening band should be on their own headlining tour.

With no fuzz, as soon as Funeral Party took the stage, the energy got moving. Tim Madrid gave out a beat impossible to ignore, while James Lawrence Torres strumed the guitar almost as if it was the last thing he would do in his young life. Chad Elliott’s voice sounded a bit healthier, not as raspy as in the record but still powerful. Kimo Kauhola held the bass with a smile on his face, he enjoyed the moment, he felt the energy of the music, the same energy that was moving the audience. Most of the audience did not know who this band was, yet they were moving, dancing, sharing the moment with the band. For a bit, those of us who follow the band got a bit lost, wanting to chant to the words of “Finale” and “New York City Moves To The Sound of LA”, later picking up what Elliott had added. Let’s keep in mind, these songs have been inside their pockets for a while now and they have to switch it up a bit just to have more fun out there. Tim Madrid was essential to set up the mood, giving away a sound almost Latin. Most of the time, you were lost in the music, feeling it more than anything else; your surroundings were obsolete and this Funeral Party was were you wanted to be.

If you have a chance to see these guys live, do so. If you have a chance to listen to these guys on record, do so. The energy, the movement they give away is pure. Five musicians who listen to each other and respond to each other’s sound, irresistible for the soul.

Watch an interview with lead singer of Funeral Party, Chad...

Watch an interview with lead singer of Funeral Party, Chad Elliott, and keep posted for the review of the show in Las Vegas, NV.

Watch an exclusive interview with EYES SET TO KILL.

Friday 22, 2011. Las Vegas, Nevada

Arriving at the venue was easy; once there, the feeling of anticipation was high among the few people that were present. Yet somehow everyone felt a bit awkward. The venue was Vamp’d and even though everyone was waiting for Edward Cullen to show up, the place was visibly for big, biker dudes. A punk rock show in a biker place was the last thing anybody would imagine. However, motorcycles aside, the show started opening with Living With Lions. This band is the most underrated band in this tour. Only a few people had showed up yet this band gave a show that I for one, will remember for years. They moved around the stage like they owned it, the energy of the place slowly augmenting. Their instruments did not take a beating; they were treated with respect and each member got the most from their sound. Make Do and Mend were up next, a bit more people gathered around the place but it wasn’t quite full yet. MDAM did as LWL, they gave it all to the small venue. The crowd didn’t look quite there yet until about half set when people started moving around a little more. The good thing about the venue is that it had great sound, sometimes some guitars drowned the others but overall it was fine.

By the end of MDAM’s set everyone stepped outside to this little terrace where all the merch was. The terrace however was jammed pack and you could barely get the precious air that you came looking for in the first place. A couple of minutes when by and a guitar started to resonate around the building so everyone went inside. The Wonder Years were up next and the venue was full, there were high tables occupying half of the audience’s space but the crowd didn’t care; no, not during this set. The crowd was formed of young adults, not teenagers, which was a nice change for once. It seemed that the show was announced as 21+ because the venue was really a bar, but underage were still allowed in for the show. Nevertheless the crowd was great, they sang to every song and jumped to every beat, even defying the security and crowd surfing a couple of times. In the middle of the set, however, Dan announced you would be kicked out if they saw you crowd surfing. That did not slow the crowd, their happiness was visible and it reflected on the band. Then Fireworks was announced next. The anticipation of their return was traveling fast among those present. The band took the stage and the first song did not seem to ignite the audience until the end of the song when David, the singer, thanked his band mates for holding him up through the most difficult week of his life. That’s when the crowd turned on the switch and the party started, they went wild and the biker dudes had no idea what was going on. You could see the happiness in every member’s face while they sang their brand new song “Summer” off their upcoming album Gospel. They were there to play a rock show, to enjoy the music, and to take in the energy given to them by every soul in the place. On the last song David asked everyone to go wild and enjoy themselves and sing along, and the crowd obeyed. Guys started to climb on stage with the band and then throwing themselves at the crowd, having their five seconds of glory during a rock show; however, this was not well recieved by security and some started to engage in discussions with the kids they could not kick out. At the end of the set the band made some remarks about it defending their fands. Fireworks is a band that was created to play live, the ambience is unbelievable and every guy is cool. Their comeback show was great and I’m sure every show in the Manscout Jamboree tour is also great, so go, now.

What you should take from The Honesty’s music is that you don’t need all that fancy equipment and big names, you just need friends that share the same passion as you and make music with honesty.

1. Where was the recording done? and how is your recording process like?

We recorded in Waldorf, Maryland at a studio owned by a friend named Michael Bridgett.

2. How was it for you to record with AJ?

It wasn’t too crazy for us. AJ and I go way back so it’s been something we’ve been trying to do for a few years now. The stars just seemed to have aligned for this particular project.

3. What epic story is behind the name The Honesty?

The Honesty is a reflection of the music we wanted to put out and the people we try to be. We just wanted to make good, honest music that everyone could relate to.

4. What epic stories are behind the songs “Heart” and “Runaway”?

Heart is basically about putting your all into everything no matter how scared it makes you, regardless of if you get what you want in the end either. It’s just about putting everything you have into something.

Runaway is about moving on from things that didn’t work out, finding what you want and being able to live out your dreams because of it.

5. What are your goals/plans for the summer?

Our goals are to start touring. We’ve been talking with a bunch of bands and hopefully we’ll have something lined up by next month.

6. Are you having any future shows or songs?

We have a bunch of shows we’re in the process of booking which will be announced soon, and we’re always writing new material. It could never hurt to put out a new song.

Check them out on iTunes and Purevolume.

Check out “Runaway” by The Honesty and get it on...

Check out “Runaway” by The Honesty and get it on iTunes and Purevolume.

Hello everyone!

With an uptempo sound on their debut album “Crave”, The Anytime somehow manage to keep you craving for more.

•First of all, why The Anytime?

Well, after months of shooting out ideas The Anytime was the only band name that none of us hated. Unfortunately there’s no life altering experience behind our name… yet.

•What do you guys usually listen to, who influences you to sound the way you do?

Our sound is the drive of european house, sex apeal of r&b, infectiousness of pop with the swagger of rock and roll. Think if Deadmau5, Usher, Queen, and Maroon 5 had a beautiful baby.

•How was it working with Jordan Schmidt, how did he influence you in the making of the record?

Jordan played an interesting roll on this album. We actually had all the songs previously written, and brought them to a different producer who failed to finish the project. Jordan was responsible for cleaning up someone else’s mess and making it sound professional. We feel he completely accomplished that, and can’t thank him enough.

•Who would you like to work with in the future, in the studio and on tour?

We’d really like to work with Butch Walker, David Guetta, and Deadmau5 just to name a few. Our producer wish list is probably the thing we talk most about when huddled around a bottle of Jack.

•What do you like about playing live shows and touring?

Everything… Minus the complete lack of sleep you get on the road.

•Your music makes people want to get up and dance, what do you think about today’s scene leaning more to the upbeat songs?

When times are tough people lean towards positive artistic outlets to deal with the chaos. We like to have a good time and our music is a good representation of that. Hopefully people are more inclined to embrace our music if thats the direction music seems to be going.

•In you eyes how has the scene changed and how has it worked on your favor and influenced your sound?

Music is always changing. With the internet and all the producing tools today, it has worked both in our favor and against us. Society is all about instant gratification, so there is a lot of music put out with no intention of longevity. A pop culture reference can really sell a song, but can become irrelevant soon afterwards. On the other hand, it can provide a great snapshot of that period in time. We want to create music that captures where we are now as people, not what phone just came out or movie I just saw.

Get their debut album Crave on iTunes, and stream it on Purevolume and Myspace.

Want some FREE MUSIC?!? When you ask a band, “Why areyou doing this?”...

Otenki Interview

When you ask a band, “Why areyou doing this?” everyone usually says the same thing: “We love music!”. However, Otenki has proven that they have been dreaming about this moment of their career for years, and they are looking for more. In a recent interview with guitarist Enoma Asowata we got an inside look at the band and their upcoming work, Kinetic.

What are some hardships that the band has survived through?

There’s some of the obvious things like friends and family questioning our decision to pursue music, the internal question we all have to ask ourselves “What are we doing with our lives?”, risking our personal relationships, having gear stolen, being mugged while we were recording, not knowing where your next meal was coming from while you’re touring all to work towards something that’s bigger than all of us. There’s always going to be challenges and hardships but the important thing is that you don’t give up ever.

What separates you from all the other bands out there right now?

I think what really separates us from our contemporaries is our tenacity.

What is your take on touring?

We love being on the road. There’s definitely nothing quite like it. You really learn what you’re made or driving across the country, meeting all your fans, being with the same people for months at a time. It’s amazing. Wish we could just go on tour forever.

How was it for you guys to record your EP?

Working with James Paul Wisner was a dream come true. He’s been a huge part of records we loved growing up as musicians and to have him agree to produce this record with us was incredible. He is very demanding in the studio and did what he had to do to get the best ideas out of us.

Did you use any tricks on the recording process or try to keep it organic?

The writing process for us is very organic. We’ve always worked best when our lead guitarist comes with an idea of a song and we build upon it. A majority of this upcoming record was done with him working on the song ideas, presenting them to us, then we’d go to demo the ideas out with each member adding their influence to the piece and finally writing lyrics to the melody.

As far as recording, James has a method and a thought process that we feel works best for the songs we had at the time. He would sit us down and we’d play the songs acoustically. He then would help us dissect what we wrote and understand the writing process and why certain songs hit the way they do. Also, we definitely wanted more electronics on this record. Mixing programming with rock music for us has always been something we’ve wanted to do and this time we were afforded the luxury to explore a vast spectrum of sounds to blend together.

How do you want to influence everyone who listens to you?

Here’s the thing music is incredibly subject platform to try an influence anyone. Personally I would love it if something we wrote moved them to pick up an instrument themselves or do something that expresses their lives in some way. Art and expression sometimes is trivialized in our society as being a “hobby” and I want to help create people who feel differently.

What equipment do you most like to use?

Everyone uses different things. I personally love Gibson Les Paul guitars. I use them live, I used them while recording this album (and any future OTENKI albums) and they are just beautiful pieces of art. Fausto loves Fender guitars, he is currently rocking a
Fender Black Top Jaguar, it plays fast which is great for lead players. Josh uses Fender Basses; I believe he has a P-Bass and J-Bass in his arsenal.
The Terror - our drummer loves OCDP drums and our keyboardist uses mostly Roland and M-Audio keyboards and interfaces for his sound.

What are your plans as a band after the release of the EP?

Our plan is to spend the summer on the road playing shows and promoting the new album. Hopefully we’ll be able to fund a music video for “GHOSTS”.

What’s your take on the state of the music scene now and how it has changed on the past few years?

The music scene is interesting because anyone with a laptop and a midi controller can record, mix, master and sell their songs on iTunes in a matter of days. However because the barrier to entry has now lowered as the digital age presses on there’s a leveled but immensely crowded playing field so music can also lose value to listeners. As a musician you really just want people to love and enjoy your art as much as you
do, but the reality is if you want to stay on the road and making records you have to keep making money.

No one has it completely figured out right now. It’s an exciting time we live in for the industry.

Otenki’s ucomping album Kinetic will be released this spring. In
the meantime, check them out on Myspace, Twitter, Facebook and Purevolume.

Otenki was formed in the Summer of 2004 by Enoma Asowata...

Otenki was formed in the Summer of 2004 by Enoma Asowata (Guitar), Fausto Padilla (Lead Guitar/Vocals), German Hernandez (Vocals), and Josh Tenorio (Bass/Vocals). The band is proof that determination and hard work will get you to where you want to be. The band did everything they could to get themselves noticed and it is extremely inspiring to say that they accomplished what they set out to do.

After playing acoustic shows, passing out endless amounts of flyers, and crashing weddings; Otenki was then able to build their own fan base. Once they got their name out there they were able to get themselves a spot on The Taste of Chaos Tour (2005, 2006, and 2009) as well as the Vans Warped Tour (2005 and 2009). In late 2009 keyboardist Colton Majors was added to the band’s lineup and Josh’s brother Hector had came back into the band around the same time.

The band is currently working on releasing their upcoming EP, called Kinetic. If you’re wondering what to expect from the upcoming EP then prepare yourself for “soaring vocal melodies, pulsating beats, and ripping guitars while maintaining the band’s love for pop sensibility.”

My favorite song off the EP would have to be the self titled track, Kinetic. It’s complete with catchy lyrics, upbeat keyboard parts, and heavy yet soft guitar riffs. This was actually my first time listening to Otenki and I must say I was blown away by their talent right off the bat. Without hesitation I’d highly recommend them for fans of Anberlin and Taking Back Sunday. Get excited for “Kinetic” to be released during Spring 2011!!!!

Watch the debut music video of “Heralds” by Wolves...

Watch the debut music video of “Heralds” by Wolves At The Gate off their brand new album We Are The Ones.
